Chapter 13

The mission wasn’t going well, and Flynt, left with time to think about it, wondered if that wasn’t partly her fault. She’d come here for her own reasons, not to help with the mission. Even when she’d learned that the universe was in trouble from the rising Haeres, it hadn’t changed her focus. This mission mattered, and it deserved her full devotion.

Queen Milisade was planning to die for this… even more, she’d been willing to lose Nekolai over it, without ever saying a word in her own defense.

Lem was suffering. That was obvious, and whether he knew it or not, he was in grave danger from Chaos.

Flynt waited in the doorway to the common area, looking into the kitchen, where Captain Grey, Captain Cross, Nekolai, Nyle, and Lem were looking for more tracking and spy devices. Flynt didn’t want to go in and be part of it. There was no way she could help, but she did need to talk to Lem.

“What are you doing?” Azucena whispered, materializing at her side.

“Gathering courage.”

“That sounds bad.” Azucena peered at the men, her eyes lingering on Lem. “Especially given you are watching the colossus. Not sure I have that kind of courage. Can I help?”

“Yeah, tell me: When I asked you to come with me, you didn’t want to, but you agreed anyway. Why?”

Azucena shrugged her patterned shoulders. “It didn’t hurt me.”

“And if it had?”

“Then you wouldn’t have asked it of me.”

Flynt tapped the back of her head against the doorway, letting the vibration move through her. She was about one hundred percent certain she still would have pushed for Azucena to come. And maybe that was okay, being a bit selfish sometimes. But this mission was putting a lot in perspective. “I love you, Azu. And I got you killed.”

“You didn’t hurt me.”

“But if I’d walked away, you’d be alive and now it isn’t just one life on the line. The Aspects are rising. If I let that happen, even if I’m not the one killing everyone, the consequences are still on me. And what if they die?” Flynt nodded her head toward Nekolai and Lem. “That would be on me, too.”

“And how can you stop it?”

“I don’t know.” Flynt briefly nibbled on her lower lip, watching Lem hunker over behind the bar. “Not yet. But finding the answer has to be my focus.”

Azucena sighed. “Aren’t you already committed to that quest?”

Flynt shoved herself off the doorframe to stand up tall. She turned to look at Azucena’s sweet face. “There’s a lot distracting me. I need to know some things… make a decision. I need to focus.”

The men in the kitchen finished on the last corner, and the captains started heading her way. Lem followed. As expected, Azucena disappeared the moment that Lem got close. Rather than waiting, Flynt pushed into the kitchen and headed directly toward Lem.

Nyle swept out first, a look of determination on their face. Flynt had a feeling they were hurrying directly to Karis’ side. Whyever Nyle was loyal, Flynt was certain that they were.
